En Li

En Li (Ph.D. Washington University in St. Louis 2015) is an assistant professor of Asian history at Drake University. Her current book manuscript, Betting on Empire: Public Sphere, Meritocracy, and Rationalized Bureaucracy in China, 1850s–1905, highlights the significance of weixing, a highly organized gambling practice where money was bet on surnames that would pass the civil service examinations and reveals critical development with Chinese culture and society in the nineteenth century. Li has published articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Frontier of History in China and Recreation and Society in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
