Faye Mercier

Faye Mercier is a lecturer in television and cross-media at the University of Amsterdam. Her work focuses on the media industries of South Korea, paying particular attention to both the sociocultural implications and the socio-economic resonances of various media content. Her interest in Korean media stems from her time as a film studies undergraduate at Trinity College Dublin, where melodramatic K-Dramas provided the opportunity for emotional catharsis during stressful deadline periods. Her many hours of K-Drama consumption culminated in a dissertation focusing on atemporal mechanisms and melodrama in contemporary K-Dramas. In her more recent work, she has focused on the representation and negotiation of youth precarity in South Korean reality television. Alongside an interest in K-Pop, K-Dramas and Japanese reality television, she has also researched diverse topics such as Brexit, fandom studies and the Irish media industry.
