Garry Hunter
Garry Hunter is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and an invited member of the International Curators Forum. He is the author of Urban Art: The World as a Canvas (Arcturus London, 2013/Swedish translation, Arctic 2015) and has edited ten publications including Responses to Conflict and Loss (University of Hertfordshire Press, 2009). His Lifelines Workbook (Fitzrovia Noir, 2015) documents an Esmée Fairbairn creative project to link up six art studios across north-east England that provide facilities for more than 500 people with mental health issues. His practice investigates emerging correlations between language and image, involving immersive research. ‘Textographs’ built up through phone messaging, for Betamaps with the University of Edinburgh, were inspired by observing processes in the cognitive testing of elders. This process of ‘recalled descriptions’ fed into the textographs to describe photographs not taken, creating prose framed to resemble traditionally framed exhibition prints. With the Fab Lab at Roskilde University he is developing a sonic interface to visually capture voice patterns, investigating sparked electrical outputs of words and phrases common to Denmark and north-east England. Hunter’s continuing work with Cultural Spring, now in its second phase, involves three managing partners, the University of Sunderland, The Customs House in South Shields and The Music Arts and Culture (MAC) Trust, engaging more residents in expanded areas of South Tyneside and Sunderland.
