Gemma Connell
Gemma Connell is a dancer, choreographer and creative producer who has worked across the United Kingdom for the past eight years. She is the Artistic Director of The Artifact. Her artistic practice is rooted in a post-hip hop context, using dance, text and visual art, collectively to explore social issues. Her process is threefold: exploring visual, performance and text-based pieces for individual projects. These examine the hip hop notion of the remix by encouraging audiences to rearrange words and movements. She graduated from The University of Warwick with a BA in English Literature. Whilst at university, she trained in hip hop with one of Kanye West’s former dancers. Gemma has worked with Hip Hop Theatre Godfather Jonzi D, and has performed with Community Arts North West, Exodus, Global Grooves and Cheshire Dance. As a freelancer, she has worked with Rosie Kay Dance Company, The Cooper Gallery and Youth Theatre Arts Scotland.
