George Toles
George Toles is distinguished professor of literature and film at the University of Manitoba and the author of A House Made of Light (Wayne State University Press, 2001), Paul Thomas Anderson (University of Illinois Press, 2016) and the recently published Curtains of Light: Theatrical Space in Film (SUNY Press, 2021) and Status Update (At Bay Press, 2021). For over 25 years, in films such as Archangel (1990), The Saddest Music in the World (2003), Brand upon the Brain! (2006) and My Winnipeg (2007), he was Guy Maddin’s screenwriting collaborator. He has also written the screen story and co-written the screenplay of the stop-motion animated feature Edison and Leo (2008). A second collection of George’s mini-narratives, All the People in My Head, will be published later this year. He has also published an essay on shaving scenes in film in the Summer 2024 issue of Raritan.
