Hae-kyung Um
Hae-kyung Um is lecturer in music and member of the Institute of Popular Music (IPM) in the School of Music, University of Liverpool, UK. She completed her musical training at Seoul National University and her Ph.D. in anthropology and ethnomusicology at Queen's University, Belfast. Subsequently, she received grants and fellowships from the Leverhulme Trust and the Economic and Social Research Council (UK), and from the International Institute for Asian Studies in the Netherlands that took her to Central Asia, Russia and China. Her research areas include the classical, folk and popular performing arts of Asia with a focus on tradition in modernity, diaspora and migration, intercultural performance and identity. She edited and contributed to Diasporas and Interculturalism in Asian Performing Arts (RoutledgeCurzon, 2005) and is currently completing a monograph on Korean p'ansori musical drama.
