Hannah C. Gunderman

Hannah Gunderman obtained their Ph.D. in geography (with a cultural geography focus) in 2018 from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Their dissertation work involved a study on the impacts that science fiction media, specifically Doctor Who, can have on our perceptions and understandings of real-world geographical locations, historical figures and events, and geopolitics. Having grown up using film, television and video games as respite from recurring struggles with depression, they are passionate about understanding the ways in which people seek comfort from these types of media and how they can become digital spaces of safety. After several years of working in academia as an academic librarian in the area of data, gaming and popular culture, Hannah decided to make the leap to industry. As the well-being researcher for Kinder World, a free-to-play social–emotional well-being game developed by Lumi Interactive, they synthesize literature, conduct player research and use cultural geography principles of placemaking to help design digital safe spaces.
