Harriet Hughes
Harriet Hughes is a doctoral researcher in African studies at the University of Sussex. Her research asks how Nigerian postcolonial subjectivities are activated through the practice, networks and spaces of fashion from 1960 to 2018. She is particularly interested in fashion as a space for the rearticulation of gender, alternative social worlds and reimagining of tradition. Another thread is the representation of fashion in museum spaces in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and its entanglement with the legacies of colonialism. Prior to undertaking her Ph.D., she worked in curatorial roles in the UK museum sector.
