Hui Yan Chew

Hui Yan Chew is a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Language of Aichi Shukutoku University. She was awarded her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Humanities, Nagoya University, Japan, where she has studied Sinophone Malaysian films since 2000. She is particularly interested in Malaysia’s socio-historical and political aspects and uses Sinophone studies as her theoretical framework, and in conjunction with diaspora studies, accented cinema and metropolitanism, as featured in her doctoral dissertation. She has published papers entitled ‘A study on inter-ethnic relations through Yasmin Ahmad’s films’ and ‘Making inroads into a taboo subject: Film production by Malaysian Chinese’ (https://doi.org/10.6993/MJCS.202011_9(1).0001) in the Malaysian Journal of Chinese Studies. Her research interests include Malaysian cinema, Sinophone studies, diasporic filmmaking and identity politics.
