Ian Condry

Ian Condry is a cultural anthropologist and professor of Japanese culture and media studies in the Department of Comparative Media Studies & Writing at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is the author of two books, Hip-Hop Japan (Duke University Press, 2006) and The Soul of Anime (Duke University Press, 2013), both of which explore globalization from below. Starting in 2018, he hosts a weekly radio show on WMBR 88.1 FM Cambridge (https://wmbr.org/) called Near & Far, which revolves around Japanese hip hop and related genres (https://www.mixcloud.com/iancondry/). In 2019, he founded the MIT Spatial Sound Lab as a community studio for immersive sound productions, with the goal of creating more listener-centred experiences of original electronic music and experimental sound, including with his own music releases as Leftroman.
