Iliyana Nedkova

Iliyana Nedkova is a curator of contemporary visual and performing art. Her most recent curatorial projects include The Same Subject Continued (2023) – the first survey exhibition by Mare Tralla in the United Kingdom; Duets (2023) by Gabriel Schmitz as part of Scotland’s Pomegranates festival of international traditional dance; Arrivals Departures (2022) by Albena Mihaylova-Bendji as part of the 59th Venice Biennale; Peace Cranes (2020–22) exploring the twin existential threats of nuclear weapons and climate change; We Refuse to be Scapegoats (2021) by Pam Skelton at London’s P21 Gallery. Previously, Iliyana held Associate Curatorships at Perth’s Theatre and Concert Hall 2005–20 where she founded the Threshold artspace, commissioning and acquiring 350 works, including multi-screen installations by over one hundred and fifty artists, as well as at Sofia’s ARC Projects 2006–10, Liverpool’s Foundation for Art and Creative Technology 1996–2001 and Edinburgh’s Stills Centre for Photography 2001–03 where she put Eastern European artists centre stage. Her curatorial interests include artivism, intangible cultural heritage and women artist’s practices. Iliyana holds an M.Phil. in curating contemporary art from Liverpool John Moores University and an M.Litt. in English and American studies with history and theory of culture from the University of Sofia. As a writer, public speaker and literary translator, Iliyana has contributed to a wide range of conferences, publications and books.
