Jason Kennedy

Jason Kennedy is a senior lecturer, curriculum leader and animation pathway leader for the animation, visual effects and game design major at Auckland University of Technology. He is both a professional animator and actor and uses his combined experience to investigate the nature of performance within the contexts of animation and motion capture. His Ph.D. examines how the constructed nature of animated performances challenges our understanding of acting and suggests a paradigm revision for how acting is understood within performance capture. In related articles, Kennedy explores how acting and presence are framed within a virtual acting context. He has produced an updated language for articulating how virtual actor (vactor) performances navigate the uncanny valley. This update formalizes existing terminology related to virtual performance and creates a taxonomy of performance modes among virtual actors to better understand their acting capabilities.
