Jeremy Swist

Jeremy Swist is a lecturer in the Department of Classical Studies at Brandeis University. He earned his Ph.D. in classics from the University of Iowa. His research areas include historiography and rhetoric under the Roman Empire, the thought and writings of the emperor Julian, and the reception of ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium in metal music. His publications in this last area include ‘Satan’s Empire: Ancient Rome’s anti-Christian appeal in extreme metal’ (Metal Music Studies 5.1, 2019), ‘Headbanging to Byzantium: The reception of the Byzantine Empire in heavy metal music’ (What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!, edited by E. Alışık, Istanbul Research Institute, 2021) and ‘Sparta and the reception of ancient history in metal music’ (The Cambridge Companion to Metal Music, edited by J. Herbst, Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2023).
