Joan Waltemath
Joan Waltemath (b. 1953 in Nebraska) has lived and worked in New York City since 1977 and collaborated with filmmakers, musicians, architects, writers, and other artists in collective groups and through special projects since the early days of the No Wave era. “As an artist I locate my roots in the cross-disciplinary exchange that took place in the 1970s and 80s in downtown New York. This was a time when artists colonized lower Manhattan, worked together in groups, and there were alternatives to commercial galleries. Like many artists at the time, I rented a floor in an empty building and constructed an environment where I live and work.” Recent awards include the Helen Frankenthaler Award for Innovation and Experimentation in Painting from the Foundation for Contemporary Art in 2022, as well as the Jacob Lawrence Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2018. Joan received her BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) (1976) and her MFA in Painting from Hunter College (1993).
