John Orr

John Orr was Professor Emeritus in the School of Social and Political Studies and has published widely in many areas of Film Studies and Modern Culture. These include the relationship between film, culture and modernity; stylistic and narrative innovation in the feature film; and the development of modernism in European and American cinemas.

His books include Cinema and Modernity (Polity, 1993), Contemporary Cinema (Edinburgh UP, 1998) and The Art and Politics of Film (Edinburgh UP, 2000).

He was also co-editor, with Colin Nicholson, of Cinema and Fiction (Edinburgh UP 1992); with Olga Taxidou, of Post-war Cinema and Modernity: A Film Reader (Edinburgh UP, 2000); and, with Elzbieta Ostrowska, of The Cinema of Andrzej Wajda (Wallflower, 2003). His forthcoming publications include Alfred Hitchcock and Twentieth-Century Cinema (Wallflower, 2005) and, with Elzbieta Ostrowska, The Cinema of Roman Polanski (Wallflower, 2006). His recent publications also include essays on New Directions in European Cinema, Dogme '95, Terrence Malick, Wong Kar-Wai, Bela Tarr, Stardom in French Film, and British Cinema of the 1990s.

John passed away in September 2010.
