Jon Bird

Jon Bird is a writer, curator and artist. He is Professor of Art and Critical Theory at Middlesex University. A founder-editor of BLOCK magazine (1979–89) and the Futures series of books on visual culture (Routledge), Bird has written extensively on and curated exhibitions of contemporary visual art. These include the first Nancy Spero retrospective (ICA, London, 1987), two Leon Golub retrospectives (Dublin, London, Buffalo, New York 1999/2000 and Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, 2011) and an exhibition of Golub’s Political Portraits for the National Portrait Gallery (March–September 2016). Books include Leon Golub: Echoes of the Real (2000/2011); Otherworlds: The Art of Nancy Spero and Kiki Smith (2003); Leon Golub Powerplay: The Political Portraits (2016), all published by Reaktion Books.
