Judy Frater

Judy Frater has spent the last 25 years living and working among the Rabari and other artisans of the Kutch region of India. Frater founded Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya, the first design school for traditional artisans. In 2014, Judy co-founded Somaiya Kala Vidya to expand the programme into an institute, which she now directs, incorporating traditional knowledge, business management for artisans and core design courses so that artisans can effectively reach new global markets and strengthen their traditional identity. Among a long list of honours, Frater is a Fulbright Scholar and Ford Foundation Fellow, a recipient of the Ashoka Fellowship and the prestigious Sir Misha Black Award for Design Education. She received the 2010 Crafts Council of Indian Sanman Award for merit in the handicraft field and was named the Janet Else International Scholar.
