Julie Ann Minaai

Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Julie is an international award-winning dancer, choreographer, rehearsal director, teacher and artist of Japanese heritage. She has trained in both the United States and United Kingdom, and completed her MA in contemporary dance from the London Contemporary Dance School. Julie spent twelve years in the United Kingdom and was recognized as an ‘artist of exceptional promise’ by the Arts Council England. She relocated to Naarm/Melbourne in 2021 and she is a lecturer in dance at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), University of Melbourne, and a resident artist at the Immigration Museum and the Bowery Theatre. She additionally teaches at Chunky Move and Lucy Guerin. Julie has toured internationally across six continents and presented her choreographic works in the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Portugal, Lebanon and Taiwan. Other commissions include: Multicultural Arts Victoria (Australia), Laguna Beach Dance Festival (California), National Dance Festival (Pennsylvania), Paliku Theatre (Hawaii), U.Dance National Festival (Plymouth), The Place (London), NCSL Jeju (South Korea), Victorian College of the Arts (Australia) and Configuration Company (Australia). Julie’s interdisciplinary practice explores stories of immigration, ancestral memory and cultural identity, and practices and elements from Japanese culture. Connection with audience and community are focal points in her work.
