Karen Arriaza Ibarra
Karen Arriaza Ibarra is a professor in audiovisual communication at the Faculty of Information Sciences in Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. Her work focuses on the structure of public and private media, European media, and comparative analysis of the media across the world. She is particularly interested in studying media phenomena such as populism, political communication, and women’s rights movements that cut across country contexts (especially Northern and Southern Europe). Her recent publications include the book Public Service Media in Europe: A Comparative Approach (Routledge, 2015), and journal articles on ‘Commemoration and the expression of political identity’ (Tourism Management, Elsevier 2018), among several others. She is currently Chair (2016–20) of the International Communication Section of the IAMCR (International Association for Media Communication and Research) and is the Director of the Research Group ‘The Nordic Model and Culture of the Information Society’. She has been a visiting fellow at the University of Perugia in Italy (2014 and 2018); also at Linnaeus (2014), Mittuniversitetet (2012 and 2019) and Stockholm (2016) Universities in Sweden; Vrije University in Brussels (2014); Friedrich Alexander University-Erlangen (2013) and Jade Hochschule (2011) in Germany, and Communication University of China (2018). She speaks Spanish (mother tongue), English and French and is currently in the advanced level of Swedish.
