Kathy Engel

Kathy Engel is Chair and Associate Arts Professor, Department of Art & Public Policy, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. Kathy Engel has worked for 40 years in the nexus of art, imagination, community, and social just movements. She is the founder or co founder of numerous efforts including the organization MADRE, which she led for five years. She co- founded Riptide Communications, the Hayground School, East End Women in Black, Lyrical Democracies, Poets for Ayiti, among others. She has produced numerous cultural political projects and consulted on strategy and development. Her work has been published widely in anthologies, and poetry and social justice journals, most recently in Poet Lore, Women’s Voice For Change, and Poetry, and forthcoming in the anthology Ghost Fishing. Her books include Ruth’s Skirts (IKON, 2007), We Begin Here: Poems for Palestine and Lebanon (Interlink Books, 2007), and The Kitchen with artist German Perez. She performed her elegiac suite The Lost Brother Alphabet with dancer/choreographer Suchi Branfman at the Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, CA. She is looking at the question of liberatory language.
