Kyle J. Messick

Kyle J. Messick (Ph.D.) is a social psychologist that specializes in the areas of religion and metal studies. He advocates for open science practices and is a leader in studying heavy metal music culture from a psychological perspective. He is the director of the USCB Social & Cultural Psychology Laboratory at the University of South Carolina Beaufort where he involves students in mixed methods research. His research has been published by multiple reputable publishers, including Routledge, Brill and Intellect, and his works have drawn broader media attention including by British tabloid The Guardian and popular US metal magazine Decibel. His research has encompassed the experiences of dis/ability, mental health struggles, collecting behaviours, the COVID-19 pandemic, lyrical preferences, misogynistic themes, psychological functions, desecration and the sacred within metal cultural contexts.
