Laura E. Smith

Laura Smith is assistant professor of art history at Michigan State University with specializations in North American arts, Native American arts, and photography. She received her PhD in 2008 from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her research focuses on American photography and modern and contemporary Native American art. She is the author of Horace Poolaw, Photographer of American Indian Modernity (2016) and "Complex Negotiations: Beadwork, Gender, and Modernism in Horace Poolaw's Portrait of Two Kiowa Women," in Locating American Art: Finding Art's Meaning in Museums (2016), Cynthia Fowler, ed. Her writings have also been published in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian exhibition catalogue For the Love of His People: The Photography of Horace Poolaw (2015), American Indian Art Magazine, Great Plains Quarterly, and Third Text.
