Laurel Jay Carpenter

A visual art performer, Dr Laurel Jay Carpenter investigates longing, awe and intimacy, while troubling subjectivity, in her durational live works. Originally from the United States, she exhibited in New York City since 1992. More recently, Carpenter has presented projects across the United Kingdom, European Union and Scandinavia, including the 2007 Venice Biennale, 2013 Bergen International and 2019 Prague Quadrennial. Carpenter served as associate professor of art at Alfred University from 2005 to 2016, before initiating practice-based doctoral research at Northumbria University as a means to contextualize and disseminate an intersectional feminist and new materialist methodology as evidenced within her performances. She regularly partners with Norwegian artist Terese Longva as Longva+Carpenter; their monograph, 10 Together, published by PABlish, was released in 2022, and won the Best Publication Award at the Prague Quadrennial the following year.
