Lauren Bridgeman
Lauren Bridgeman was awarded an MA in dance anthropology and BA (Hons) in dance studies from Roehampton University, earning a distinction and first, respectively. Trained in contemporary, ballet, jazz and street dance styles, her research interests include the anthropology of dance; dance and the conceptualization of the body in religion; dance, feminism and popular culture; South Asian dance; and postcolonialism and globalization. Lauren’s recent fieldwork among the Qadiri-Rifai Sufi order in London is explored in her article ‘There is more power in moving together: Movement, meaning, and spirituality in the Sufi practice zikr’. Other articles include ‘Women’s representation and hegemonic values in Bollywood dance’, and ‘A cosmopolitan future? Exploring the impact of Brexit on the arts and dance’. She has presented her research at conferences, and these include, ‘New Orientalism and Cultural Confluence in a Globalised World’ at Confluence in Stockholm, Sweden, and she was on the panel for ‘Communities of learning and pedagogy in the postgraduate studies of dance “we’re in this together”’ at the Dance Fields conference in Roehampton, London.
