Lauren WALDEN
Dr Lauren Walden is a research fellow at Birmingham City University (former Leverhulme early career fellow). She has written widely on Chinese surrealism, publishing the first monograph on the topic Surrealism from Paris to Shanghai with Hong Kong University Press and the Fondation Giacometti in October 2024 (an expanded English edition originally published with the Fondation Giacometti in November 2022); ‘Surrealism in Chinese periodicals: Hedonism, horror and Shanghai’s Former French Concession’ in Dada/Surrealism (2023) and, in spring 2025, she will publish her second monograph Surrealism and the People’s Republic of China: 1949–Present with Routledge. Her Ph.D. (2019) argued for a ‘cosmopolitan surrealism’, couching photography as a pivotal vector in the dissemination of non-European iconography within the movement, consulting primary sources in Chinese, French and Spanish.
