Les Roberts

Les Roberts is a postdoctoral researcher in the Institute of Popular Music. He is currently working with Professor Sara Cohen on the project Popular Music Heritage, Cultural Memory and Cultural Identity (POPID), a large scale international collaborative research project funded by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area). Les’s research interests are in the cultural production of place, space and mobility; urban cultural studies; GIS and cultural memory; tourism, heritage and consumption; landscape and the moving image.

Les has studied and taught social anthropology at SOAS, and cultural studies/spatial culture at Middlesex University where he completed his PhD in 2005 on cinematic geographies of travel and migration. He has taught film and cultural studies at Middlesex and London Metropolitan Universities, and from 2005-6 was project manager on the TEMPUS Palestine project at the International Institute of Culture, Tourism and Development at London Metropolitan University. From 2006-2010 Les worked as a full-time researcher in the School of Architecture on the AHRC-funded projects City in Film: Liverpool’s Urban Landscape and the Moving Image and Mapping the City in Film: a Geo-historical Analysis, which involved ethnographic work with amateur and independent filmmakers in Liverpool, and the development of a digital map of Liverpool in film, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
