Lucia Leão

Lucia Leão (Ph.D.) is an artist, writer and professor at the postgraduate programme of communication and semiotics at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP), Brazil. Born in São Paulo in 1963, Leão has exhibited in important cultural centres and museums, such as XV Biennial of São Paulo; II International Biennial of Buenos Aires; Cinético_Digital; SESC Arts Exhibition: Mediterranean; the Archive International Festival of Electronic Art, Paço das Artes, SP; and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC). Leão has been working with art and new technologies since 1989 and her work is listed in the Rhizome Art Database. Lucia Leão has a post-doctoral degree in art from UNICAMP, a Ph.D. and master’s in communication and semiotics from PUC SP and a bachelor’s of fine arts (FASM). She is the author of several articles and books, including The Labyrinth of Hypermedia, Architecture and Navigation in Cyberspace (Leão 1999); The Aesthetics of the Labyrinth (Leão 2002); Interlab: Labyrinths of Contemporary Thought (Leão 2002); Drifts: Cartographies of Cyberspace (Leão 2004); The Chip and the Kaleidoscope (Leão 2005); and The Processes of the Imaginary (Leão 2016), among others. Leão’s current research project focuses on science and communication; education and art; art in the Anthropocene; critical plant studies; and collaborative projects.
