Madhuja Mukherjee
Madhuja Mukherjee is involved with art-practice, curatorial projects and filmmaking. She is professor of film studies at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. Her research areas include the film industry, regional cinemas, sound cultures, gender, labour, city and new media. She is the author of New Theatres Ltd.: The Emblem of Art, The Picture of Success (Pune: NFAI, 2009), editor of Aural Films, Oral Cultures: Essays on Cinema from the Early Sound Era (Kolkata: JU Press, 2012) and of the award-winning anthology Voices of the Talking Stars: The Women of Indian Cinema and Beyond (Delhi: Sage, 2017). She is the co-editor of Popular Cinema in Bengal: Genre, Stars, Public Cultures (London and New York: Routledge, 2020) and Industrial Networks and Cinemas of India (London and New York: Routledge, 2021). She also adapted and illustrated Kangal Malsat (2013, Bengali), graphic novel. Mukherjee is the writer of the film Ekti Tarar Khonje (2010), co-writer of Qissa (2013), and Carnival (2012), written and directed by her, premiered at the 41st International Film Festival Rotterdam 2012. She is the artistic director of TENT Little Cinema International Festival (Kolkata)/TENT Biennale, and her second feature-film DEEP6 is in post-production.
