Makiko Nagao

In 1985, before graduating in archaeology from Keio University, Makiko Nagao joined Studio Lotus, an independent studio of award-winning animation filmmakers Renzo and Sayoko Kinoshita. Since then, as secretary to Sayoko Kinoshita, she has worked in the production, dissemination, curation and screening of animated shorts for international film festivals, art museums, TV stations and others. Makiko has been involved in many Studio Lotus films, including The Last Air Raid: Kumagaya (1993; permanent screening held at the Peace Museum of Saitama), A Little Journey (1994), Ryukyu Okoku: Made in Okinawa (2004) and others. For the development of the animation field, Makiko has been serving the organization of the Hiroshima International Animation Festival continuously since its first edition in 1985. She is also the General Secretary of ASIFA-JAPAN since 1997. In recent years, Makiko has also devoted herself to theoretical researches on animation, and received an MFA from Joshibi University of Art and Design in 2016. Her main interest lies in the possibility of documentation through animation. She is currently completing a Ph.D. in fine arts at Joshibi University of Art and Design.
