Martin Mulloy

Martin Mulloy is engaged in Ph.D. research at Birkbeck College, University of London, focusing on post–1976 photography in China. His current Ph.D. work, provisionally titled Resisting Amnesia, considers the impacts of the Cultural Revolution upon photography. It examines the spontaneous rise of independent photography in 1976 following the April Fifth Movement; the work, exhibitions and influence of the April Photo Society upon the development of wider contemporary Chinese photography; and contested issues of memory, trauma and nostalgia.
