Miranda Matthews

Dr Miranda Matthews lectures in art and education and is head of the Centre for Arts and Learning (CAL) at Goldsmiths University of London. Miranda taught art and design in London schools and colleges for ten years before lecturing in art and education. She has taught across the degree programmes in Educational Studies at Goldsmiths since 2016. Miranda researches issues of freedom, autonomy and representation in the arts and learning. Her writing often looks at theoretical mapping of arts practice, for empowering critical pedagogies. She is currently researching responses to recent policy in practice with teachers of art and design, and interdisciplinary approaches to visual and discursive practice in higher education. In the new paradigms of social distancing, Miranda is researching affective and creative online spaces. She develops programmes of research and events for CAL, beginning with Discomfort Zones (2019–20), then Affective Digital Presence (2020–21), and looking towards Ecologies in Practice (2021–22).
