Miroslav Melčák

Miroslav Melčák is a research fellow at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague. He studied Arabic language and Islamic studies at Charles University, Prague, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2009. His main research interests include charitable foundations (awqaf) in Syria and Egypt and Islamic urbanism of northern Mesopotamia. Between 2013 and 2015, he was a member of the Czech archaeological mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (project ‘Medieval Urban Landscape in Northeastern Mesopotamia’). Currently, he is a research team member of the project ‘Monuments of Mosul in Danger’, documenting and researching the destroyed heritage of the town.
