Nina Mdwaba
Nina Mdwaba (she/they) is a South African multidisciplinary storyteller exploring creatively through spoken word, painting, sculpture, film and performance. They currently also practise as an HCPC-accredited dramatherapist and facilitator in London, United Kingdom. Nina completed a BA joint honours in psychology and theatre studies at the University of Glasgow (2019), followed by a master’s in drama and movement therapy at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (2021). Their performance work explores themes of race, identity and Africanist spirituality. Their trauma-informed therapeutic practice involves working with complex trauma, racial trauma, asylum-seeking communities and children with complex attachment needs. A large focus of their practice is on Black mental health (Africa and wider diaspora), working with and advocating for culturally responsive dramatherapy praxis with multicultural client groups. In 2021, Nina performed at the BADth conference, exploring the trope of the ‘Strong Black Woman’ and Black female mental health disparities in the United Kingdom. Separately, they also presented on cross-cultural storytelling (alongside colleagues) the same year. Nina will be presenting at the BADth conference again this October (2024), on the themes of ‘Creativity in Conflict’, in ‘Blue Light’, a collaborative shadow-puppetry performance and Q&A exploring the journeys of migrant and asylum-seeking communities.
