Paul Starkey

Paul Starkey is emeritus professor at Durham University and a former head of the Arabic Department there. A specialist on Arabic literature and culture, he is chairman of the Banipal Trust for Arab Literature and until 2018 was vice-president of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES). In 2021 he was a recipient of the BRISMES Award for Services to Middle Eastern Studies. An expert on modern Arabic literature, he is internationally recognized for his translations of Arabic novels. His translation of The Book of the Sultan’s Seal by Youssef Rakha won the 2015 Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation, and his translation of The Shell by Mustafa Khalifa won the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding in 2017.
