Philip Ely
Philip Ely is Reader in Design at Manchester Metropolitan University where he co-leads the Transformative Practices research group, and a visiting research fellow at Curtin University’s School of Management & Marketing. Philip holds a BA(Hons) from the University of Portsmouth, a PGCE from the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL) and a Ph.D. from the University of Surrey. A fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (RSA), Philip joined academia in 2002 after professional design practice in the design, IT, music and television industries including Total Design (Corporate Identity Designer), IBM (Interaction Designer), Telstar Entertainment Group (Creative Head), Granada Media (Controller of Interactive Design) and Design Bridge (Director of Digital Media). Since joining academia, he has held senior roles at University for the Creative Arts and led the development and delivery of design thinking curricula and research at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. Philip has worked extensively at the intersection between business and academia on research and knowledge exchange projects shaped by design-led innovation. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Design, Business & Society.
