Philip Lancaster
Dr Philip Lancaster is a composer, writer, editor and singer. He is a leading authority on the work of composer–poet Ivor Gurney and has brought many musical works out of the archive to publication, performance and recording. He is co-editing Gurney’s complete poetry for OUP and is endeavouring to complete a monograph on his work. He is also General Editor of the Elgar Complete Edition. As a composer, Philip is particularly inspired by poetry. Recent works include a set of haiku for solo piano based on poems by Tomas Tranströmer, Encroaching Shadows, a song cycle written in collaboration with poet John Greening, Fallen, and a major chamber oratorio, War Passion, which premièred at the Three Choirs Festival. Philip’s extended poem, Sonata: Violare, col legno, was published by Guillemot Press in 2021.
