Raden Yusuf Kurniawan

Raden Yusuf Kurniawan is a Ph.D. student in cultural anthropology at Hiroshima University, with a multidisciplinary background that includes a master’s degree in linguistics and a bachelor’s degree in Japanese literature. His research sits at the intersection of cultures, gaming culture, language, religion and philosophy. Video games have been a central part of his life since childhood, starting with consoles such as the Sega Genesis, NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and PlayStation. As a non-native English speaker, he is deeply grateful for the role video games have played in enhancing his English and Japanese language skills through their engaging narratives and gameplay. This personal journey has guided his academic pursuits, allowing him to explore video games as cultural artefacts that reflect diverse values and practices across both global and local contexts.
