René Glas

René Glas is an assistant professor of new media and digital culture, specializing in digital games and game culture, in the Department of Media and Culture Studies, Faculty of Humanities, at Utrecht University. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam on participatory culture in and around MMORPGs in 2010. His current work focuses on games and media literacy, games and paratextuality, gaming history, using game design in educational settings, and play as a research method. He is a board member of the Utrecht Center for Game Research. Selected publications are Battlefields of Negotiation: Control, Agency, and Ownership in World of Warcraft (Amsterdam University Press, 2012) and The Playful Citizen: Civic Engagement in a Mediatized Culture (co-ed, Amsterdam University Press, 2019).
