Roberto Conduru

Roberto Conduru is an esteemed art historian who holds the distinguished position of endowed professor of art history at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He has authored notable publications, such as Pérolas Negras: Primeiros Fios (Editora da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, 2013) and Arte Afro-Brasileira (C/Arte, 2007), as well as co-authored Architecture Agouda au Bénin et au Togo (Edições Fotorio, 2016). His expertise extends to curating exhibitions, including the acclaimed Quilombo do Rosário (Museu Bispo do Rosário Arte Contemporânea, 2018) and Incorporation: Afro-Brazilian Contemporary Art (Centrale Electrique, 2011). Additionally, he has co-curated prominent exhibitions such as Axé Bahia: The Power of Art in an Afro-Brazilian Metropolis (Fowler Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles, 2017) and Perles de Liberté: Bijoux Afro-Brésiliens (Grand Hornu Images, 2011). Conduru earned his Ph.D. in history from the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Brazil and has taught art history and theory at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. He has been recognized as a guest scholar at renowned institutions, including the Getty Research Institute (2012) and the Clark Art Institute (2021). In addition, he served as the president of the Brazilian Committee of Art History from 2007 to 2010.
