Rosalie M. Jones

Daystar/Rosalie Jones has been called a pioneer of ‘Native modern dance’, specializing in a genre embedded in Indigenous ancestry, cultural values and a lifetime of experience in North American Indigenous dance and storytelling. Born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, Rosalie Jones recognizes Pembina (Little Shell) Chippewa ancestry passed through her mother’s lineage. In 1980, Rosalie Jones founded Daystar: Contemporary Dance Drama of Indian America, now considered to be the first native modern dance company in the United States. From 2005 to 2017, Rosalie Jones created and taught courses rooted in cultural dance practice for the Indigenous Performance Studies programme at Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. In April, 2016, she received the First Annual Lifetime Achievement Award in Performing Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) ‘in honor of her lifetime of creativity, inspiring others and service to the field’.
