Sally Hess
Sally Hess began dancing at the 92nd Street Y with Bonnie Bird, and as a teenager studied with José Limón and Betty Jones. Most influential in her formation as a dancer and choreographer were her years with Maggie Black (ballet) and Bessie Schönberg (dance composition). Sally made her professional debut (in the role of The Child) in Doris Humphrey’s Day on Earth with José Limón. She has danced in the companies of Lucas Hoving, Dan Wagoner, Remy Charlip and Christopher Caines, more briefly with Richard Alston, Matthew Nash, Donna Uchizono and Jill Sigman (among others). Her three one-woman shows were performed in English and in French under the auspices of her own company, Dancetales/Récitsdanses. Sally was a lecturer in the arts at Princeton University (1991–97) and an associate professor in the Department of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College (1991–2010). She holds a BA in philosophy (Barnard College), a Master of Philosophy in French literature (Yale University) and is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor. With six years of study, she is delightedly becoming a ballroom dancer. In November 2017, Darius and Sally earned First Place at the Ohio Star Ball Dance Championships (Pro/Am Smooth Closed Silver L-C1).
