Sandra Fruebing

Sandra Fruebing has worked and lived in six countries on three continents. She taught design at a variety of educational institutes, including the Royal College of Art, the German University in Cairo and currently at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2018, she received a Crafting Futures Grant from the British Council, UK, to collaborate with the Ababda Bedouin craftswomen in Southern Egypt. Together, they investigated the interplay between traditionally used materials and their environmental knowledge of the landscape. She presented the work on various occasions, including the Making Futures conference and the Royal Geographical Society’s Explore conference. She frequently works with local organizations such as the Goethe Institute Cairo and the Robert Bosch Foundation and leads community workshops. She built up expertise to research and understand a craft community‘s challenges in a local context and acknowledge national and global narratives that influence a very local practice.
