Semi Ryu

Semi Ryu, a media artist, specializes in avatar and extended reality projects inspired by Korean healing rituals, exploring the intersections of art, health and virtual reality. She is a full professor of kinetic imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Arts and an associate professor of internal medicine at VCU Medicine (affiliate). Ryu holds a BFA from Korea National University of Arts, an MFA from Carnegie Mellon and a Ph.D. in humanities and communication, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Barcelona. Ryu’s work has been featured in 23 countries at international screenings, exhibitions and performances. Her articles have been extensively published, and her projects have received numerous grants. Ryu is the recipient of VCU Arts Faculty award of distinguished achievement in research, VCU National International Recognition Award, and the first-place winner of the Hamilton International Arts in Health award 2020. She has been featured at TEDxRVA, with her talk ‘Virtual reality for han’.
