Shin Aoki

Shin Aoki is professor of Department of Comparative Study of Cultures at Tsuru University, Japan. He has been conducting research on transpacific histories and memories of popular music and entertainment in the twentieth century. Among his works related to this article are a historical ethnography focusing on the music scene experienced by American servicemen in and around US military installations in postwar Japan (Aoki 2013) and a historical anthropological discussion of the production and consumption of two Japanese pop songs – ‘Shina no Yoru’ (‘China Nights’) and ‘Japanese Rumba’ – that were favoured by American military personnel in the post-Second World War period (Aoki 2017). In recent years, Aoki has started a new research project delving into hidden histories of Japanese acrobats among American circuses and vaudeville shows in the early twentieth century.
