Soft Turns
Soft Turns is the collaborative effort of Toronto-based artists Wojciech Olejnik and Sarah Jane Gorlitz. Alongside simple mechanisms—pulleys, mirrors, paper, lenses—and crucially, their own bodies, they use stop-motion animation’s capacity to stretch and collapse time, to attempt to get as close as possible to the rhythms of their subjects. The resulting contemplative videos and installations have been shown at the Belkin Art Gallery (Vancouver, 2024), Vector Festival with InterAccess (Toronto, 2024), Nuit Blanche Toronto (2023), the Plumb (Toronto, 2021), 8eleven (Images Festival, 2018), The Art Museum at the University of Toronto (2018), Oakville Galleries (2013) and VideoBrazil (Sao Paulo, 2013, 2011). They have been artists in residence at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph (2016-19), and at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography (Toronto, 2023-24), where they are currently hosting a reading group series on decentralized thinking, and have an upcoming exhibition (September 2025).
