Stéphanie Brown
Stéphanie Brown is completing a doctoral thesis in French studies at Queen’sn University, Belfast. Her project is on the application of the translation theoretical concept of Third Space to the recent evolution of North African self-representation in France as a new paradigm that moves beyond the binary notions of identity and nationhood in migrating cultures. Born from Homi Bhabha’s concept of ‘hybridity’, the Third Space has been adopted by translation theory to deconstruct the binary opposition of source and target language or, in other words, translators’ practices of domestication vs foreignization. The study of the notion of Third Space leads to the question of its limitations, not only in linguistic and historical terms but also in terms of representation and creativity. Therefore, Stéphanie Brown explores visual arts such as graffiti and photography as well as literary works and their influence on the translation and cultural argument.
