Suely Master

Suely Master is a professor in the postgraduate programme in performing arts at the Institute of Arts at UNESP. She has served as an assistant professor at the Department of Performing Arts since 1997 and has held the position of pedagogical coordinator for the bachelor’s degree in performing arts and the degree in theatre arts since 2023. She is a speech therapist specializing in voice, having graduated from the Escola Paulista de Medicina in 1978, where she also obtained specializations in speech therapy in 1980. She holds a master’s degree (1989) and a doctorate in health studies (2005). Recognized as a voice specialist by the Federal Council of Speech Therapy in 1996, she also completed a post-Doctorate in the applied linguistics studies programme at PUC-SP in 2009. Since 2012, she has been a leader of the Research Group Processes, Poetics and Vocal Technique for the Actor and coordinates the ArtInclusiva Extension Project. Having worked in theatre and cinema since 1980, she has developed research into the technique of scenic voice and its implications for expressiveness, especially concerning games and vocal improvisation, which resulted in the proposal ‘Physiology of Expressivity’. She completed internships at the Department of Speech Communication and Voice Research, University of Tampere, Finland (2004), the National Center of Voice and Speech, University of Utah, USA (2010), and the Voice Laboratory of the University School of Speech Therapy in Chile, Santiago (Oct 2013). Suely Master also contributes as a reviewer for national and international journals and has presented research projects at various national and international conferences.
