Susanne Elizabeth Wieland
Susanne Elizabeth Wieland is a designer, artist and researcher dedicated to communicating and examining the disconnect between humans and nature. Through art and design, she explores new ways of science-communication and planet-centric change. Her project, ‘The Hidden Life of a Pavement Crack’, investigates how the infinite number of stories of a single London pavement crack can comment on complex topics of urbanization and value. Analysing and exploring the species that have been pushed into the fringes of human activities: the plants that have lost significance due to lack of understanding; the soil revealing its mineralizing and cleaning abilities; the inhabitants hidden from our awareness; the new connections and novel ecosystems that emerge within urban nature. Susanne is a graduate of MA Material Futures at Central Saint Martins and was a design researcher within the ‘Designing Temporal Ecologies’ project at the University of Edinburgh.
