Tao Songzi

Tao Songzi was born in China in 1994. In her childhood, she was keen on music and started to learn the piano at the age of 7. Songzi received a BA in Chinese language and literature from Sichuan University, and an M.Sc. in social anthropology from The London School of Economics and Political Science. She then turned towards the area of music and did a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Durham University. In Tao’s doctoral fieldwork between 2020 and 2022, she lived in a rural Bai community in south-west China and explored the local Bai people’s religious music, shawm music and folksongs. Currently, Tao Songzi is an ethnomusicologist working at Yunnan Arts University. Her research interests include Bai music, musical activities on social media, musical change and continuity, and folk music as intangible cultural heritage.
