I am a children’s book writer and illustrator. This felt like a natural career choice as I spent a lot of time in my childhood reading. When I was growing up, I loved visiting the local library, which always seemed to be the place where I could find an unexpected, yet perfect book. After studying art history and design and working for several years in a preschool, I realized that I would like to create art and stories for children’s books. I returned to college and received a further degree in illustration for children’s publishing. I have been writing and illustrating children’s books ever since. Alongside this, I have tried to stay involved with the community, particularly with projects that support literacy and creativity. I was involved as a mentor to at-risk students during the time I was teaching in the United States and I taught art to afterschool groups of disadvantaged students. Being a writer/illustrator can be a solitary profession. A nice variation to this practice is the opportunity to share artworks, stories and projects with children in schools and libraries. Originally, the workshops I provided were primarily related to my own artworks and stories. These have developed to include interesting, meaningful and inclusive events and projects that could reach a wider community.
